As the appointed civil and structural engineering consultant for the feasibility study at Guru Arjan Dev Ji Gurdwara in Derby, we were tasked with delivering a design solution that would meet the needs of the growing community while maintaining the Gurdwara's architectural integrity.
The project focused on extending the existing site to accommodate new prayer halls, as well as creating additional spaces for children and guests on the ground floor, providing much-needed capacity for the various religious and community activities held at the Gurdwara.
A key aspect of the brief was the creation of large, open prayer halls without the intrusion of structural columns, ensuring the internal space remained unobstructed. This was essential to maintaining the spiritual and communal atmosphere of the halls, allowing for free movement and flexible use of the space during prayer and other events. To achieve this, our team developed innovative structural solutions, carefully balancing the need for support with the aesthetic and functional goals of the design. We explored various construction techniques, such as long-span beams and alternative load-bearing systems, to eliminate the need for central columns and maximize the usability of the space.
In addition to the structural challenges, we also addressed longstanding traffic flow and site circulation issues as part of the feasibility study. The Gurdwara’s expansion presented an opportunity to reconsider how people move around the site, both on foot and by vehicle. Our team analyzed the existing traffic patterns and proposed design adjustments to improve access, reduce congestion, and ensure a safer, more efficient layout for visitors. By looking at the project holistically, we ensured that the expanded space would not only meet the needs of the community inside the building but also improve the overall experience for those arriving at and navigating the site.
We presented the proposed scheme to the Gurdwara’s committee, who welcomed our approach and were enthusiastic about the potential improvements for both the building’s functionality and visitor experience. Our feasibility study laid the groundwork for future phases of design and development, and we are proud to have contributed to this important community project that aims to enhance both the spiritual and practical aspects of the Gurdwara.
